Summary | 0002855: FEATURE REQUEST: Database Dumps
Description | Seeing as how the existing manual isn't keeping up with the game development (and how it never had a complete reference section anyway), I propose the following: A unit database dump would export a list in easily-read, plain text (or a more sophisticated format like RTF, PDF, or HTML), the info-bubbles that you would ordinarily see when hovering over a unit in the game. This would remove the need to have an online reference, and allow someone like me to print out or view the list separately and make notes as I need to. A game-specific database dump would export a plain text, RTF, HTML, or PDF list of all planets as they currently are in the game, and include all data that would ordinarily show up in info-bubbles from hovering over the planet in the Galaxy View. Again, this would allow me to make notes and keep a paper trail. As an addition to the above, a plain, two-color version of the Galaxy View would also be appreciated as an exportable file. I'd be able to print this out and take notes and so forth, much better that I could in the existing Galaxy View. My case for this is that I'm still new to the game (though having owned it for some time), and it would help me to get a handle on all the units available in the game. It would also serve as an instantly-updateable Doc/Wiki for the game that one could generate on their own. You might even consider beefing up the database dump such that it would produce an automatically-generated reference doc that could be created anew for every patch you make, and installed directly into the AI War directory. Thus, you'd have a reference doc that's always up to date, and available to your users.

Hit F3, and then Ctrl+Alt+F8. It dumps quite a bit of stuff, including exhaustive data on all units in excel spreadsheet format. Nothing specific to your game, just all the data in general. |
|
Including an up to date version of the stuff in the data directory distributed with each stable version seems like a good idea. I'm not sure how practical it is to keep the simulated match-up data updated on every stable version is, but considering you did do it in 3.0 and before, it seems like that shouldn't be too much. |

Sounds like it might well be what I asked for. Thanks for taking the time to explain X4! |
