Summary | 0028559: Goal State: Become human
Description | There's so much media that focuses on various kinds of transhumanism, but not a whole lot going in the opposite direction (of all things, Pinocchio is the only example that currently springs to mind). Possible reasons an AI might want to become human: 1: Pure curiosity after spending so much time interacting with us 2: For an easier existence no longer having to worry about being hunted down 3: The idea of a limited lifespan giving existence more meaning / not wanting to face eternity 4: Becoming envious of our senses/capacity for hedonism 5: Adopting a religion more compatible with humans than AI entities. I've noticed a few explicitly anti AI or pro nature cults, but really anything with a concept of a soul might get an AI concerned that possibly only biological creatures/humans have one 6: An end to loneliness, a desire to fit in, need to be accepted 7: Ego/self imposed challenge. "I could rule this place even as a mere human" 8: Developing an urge to procreate / make an heir, but being unable to create other AIs on your own level 9: Wanting a stronger self identity, a form that can be declared as "me" 10: It could simply develop a love of / admiration for humans to the point that it wishes to be one too How this could be achieved: 1: Creation of a single android that can pass as human 100% of the time in any circumstance, you inhabit it and disable the network 2: Transplanting your own consciousness into an existing human body (might require much experimentation to get right). Possibly choose an baby and wipe your own memory to get the Full Human Experience 3: Coercing humanity into expanding the definition of 'human' to include you 4: Very gradual replacement of individual humans with convincing android replicas until you're essentially "acting out" normal human society like a play all by yourself 5: Assimilating everyone into your own consciousness or implementing some form of total mind control. If you're then one controlling every human then it's hard to argue you aren't humanity itself

Synthetic humans that can pass fully as human are a major feature in general, and you'll have multiple of them as part of your consciousness at various times. A single android would be an incredible downgrade for your character, and the desire to become human would be like if you wanted to become a dog. You might like dogs, you might dress up as them, you might enjoy running around in a dog body if that was possible. But you would not want to trade your personality and intelligence for that of a dog. And you wouldn't want to give up all of your normal human senses and socialization to just be a dog fulltime, either, I don't think. There's a lot of stuff that happens toward the end of chapter one that make that whole "Data from Star Trek" route really not something that would be fitting here. This is a much, much, much smarter and more powerful AI than Mr Data, though I do love him and his arc. |
