Summary | 0002957: Load large unit ball evenly into many transports
Description | There should be a way to automatically assign a large ball of units to two or more transports in a single action, causing the ball to automatically split into approximately-equal subdivisions for each transport, such that each transport contains approximately equal amounts of each ship type. When sending transports across hostile systems, one or more may be destroyed en route, so it is important to evenly divide and diversify the transport contents as much as possible. This is quite annoying to do by hand (see the description in bug 0002956).

Not sure if you've tried it, but if you select the ships you want to load and the transports you want to load them into, try Alt+Right+Click (on empty space) to bring up the context menu, and then click "Auto Load". It may not do exactly what you want, but wanted to make sure you knew about it. |
I haven't tried the "auto load" function yet. More recent games have used only one transport (to quick-jump bombers to Fortresses in systems with an AI Eye, for instance). |
Auto Load does accomplish some of my goal, but it doesn't seem to load very intelligently. I suggest that it be split into two functions: Auto Load (Fast) - Load each ship into the nearest transport, unless it would fill up, in which case spill over onto the next-nearest and so on. Auto Load (Equal) - As described above, load an (approximately) equal number of ships of each type into each transport. The current behaviour seems to be something like "pick an arbitrary nearby transport and get in". |
Auto Load (Fast) should also move the transports around to load slow units more quickly. |
