Summary0005146: Content unlocking
DescriptionIn AI War it will take you dozens of matches to see everything the game has to offer because every individual match only receives a random subset of the total content in the game. AVWW currently has only level gating as a way of keeping content for later but that's for higher end stuff and kinda limited. Unlike actions like reaching an ARS or capturing a golem it's very uneventful to hit a level gate while the actual events (e.g. defeating an overlord) don't change much beyond the immediate reward.

The general proposal (only makes sense once AVWW has more content implemented, of course) would be to maintain a set of unlocked content items (this includes anything, enemies, house and room patterns, furniture, character appearances, etc). The initial set is drawn randomly for each world (perhaps some fixed items every world gets plus a variable part). Progressing adds a fixed number of items to the content pool (e.g. leveling up adds one, beating lieutenants adds 3, killing an overlord 5-10, ...) so especially after milestone achievements you start seeing new content. This stuff can then start seeding.

Since AVWW seeds a LOT of random stuff as the player plays it's probably necessary to dole out content at a reduced rate or the player will have seen everything after a short time (that was one complaint people had about the Super Terminal).

Well, your suggestion makes some sense, but it assumes that players will start more than one world -- we're assuming that players will only start one world, and are intending to encourage that. To that end, level gating plus the natural separation of content into different regions and such ought to accomplish a nice progression, is my thought.

No, I'm assuming a single world. Just different starting sets so that when people talk about their experiences they can end up with different stories right away.

Overall I'm saying a world should be able to seed more content as the player completes milestones so when you beat an overlord the game feels different with new enemies you haven't fought before or new sights to see. Maybe new skill books to find?

Right now in the Beta we get our content increases with development milestones but later on people won't see such a rapidly increasing content set.

I see what you're saying. Having some stuff unlock based on milestones is actually really interesting, I'll have to keep that in mind as we get closer to anything like that.

Regarding having the start of the game vary a ton right from the start... some of that will naturally happen, but bear in mind that I'm actually intentionally designing the enemies that you encounter to be encountered in a semi-linear way. There is a definite difficulty curve to enemies, but within each point on the curve there's some variety that would already vary from world to world.

Same deal with the types of regions that get seeded, etc. There's just not enough long-term variety to really see that stuff yet, is the main thing. I'm not wholly sure on the milestones unlocking new stuff just yet, but I think that's probably something to explore, and for the rest I think we're already in pretty close agreement.
