Summary0006161: Have lieutenants provide "Rares"
DescriptionInspired by the resource naming discussion and the reference to CCGs, I suggest making defeating a lieutenant provide a rare card.

Now obviously that's a bit vague, so what I mean is generally if you look at rare cards in MTG they might not be the most powerful but what they are is interesting, something you can use to change or enhance the way you play the game.

So I suggest you make the reward for defeating a lieutenant something interesting, because they are limited to 3 per continent you could actually get away with making these pretty unique.

These can be anything, so advanced consumables, unique spells or guardian powers, or things equivalent to powerful enchants (I say equivalent to enchants because personally I wouldn't want them taking up enchant slots)

so for some examples, for the record most aren't actual suggestions and are just to get the concept across....

Sanctuary - A spell that sets your mana to 0 for as long as it is active but provides invincibility.

Permanent Immunity\Resistance to an element. (this would be in the uber-enchant bracket)

Gain Familiar - Something along the lines of your own permanent personal esper or amoeba.

Smart Bomb - gain a small stack of items that do unreasonable damage to all enemies on screen

Reverse Shot - Anything you fire forwards fires backwards too, for free.

The basic point is that they should have effects you can't acquire any other way, as well as there being sufficient variation in them that playing each continent (with your 3 random bonuses) would feel different, additionally because these can only be acquired when you take out a lieutenant these are implicitly limited to later tiers and battles, so they would be kicking in at just about the point where you have gotten used to\bored with playing in a certain way.

I would recommend not advertising them, as in you shouldn't know what reward you are getting till you have actually defeated the lieutenant.

That's a pretty cool idea, actually. Although, these would definitely be enchants rather than some broadly new mechanic -- having to choose between what you can and can't do is part of it. Either enchants or something like heatsuit/snowsuit that you could put on, or a bat scroll where you can transform.

Not sure there's time for something like this prior to 1.0, but maybe. It's something interesting, anyway.

I really love this idea. The really big battles - lieutenants and overlords - should both provide "setpiece rewards" - rewards that are real game-changers, in other words.

Powerful (or just unique) enchants, unique guardian powers or scroll, maybe even unlocking the crafting recipe for a unique spell (ideally unlocking the recipe on all future continents, too, but still requiring you to gather the resources to craft the spell)...

I am very strongly behind this idea. :)

I think there's definitely scope for some more extreme enchants in the game- including things which might hinder or even cripple you in one regard but give you some exotic boon to compensate.

I'm thinking enchants which reduce your max life whilst you wear them but give you enchant points per kill. Enchants which boost your attack but every second cost you a few points of health, so you have to keep killing enemies to stay alive (vampirism enchants). Enchants which allow you to move normally in the wind but make you extremely fragile.

And you could have suits which do similar things too, although of course that means new art. An suit which makes you bounce a bit with every step but greatly increases your normal jump height and negates all falling damage. A suit which hugely increases your defence against attacks but makes you clunky and slow. A suit which lets you dive underwater but weakens your attacks.

As for transmogrification, don't get me started!

For 0.905:

* Lieutenants now drop a "Rare Enchant Container" when they die; picking this up does not grant any enchant points but instead immediately gives you an enchant with at least 2 higher-than-average effects (even if you hadn't found enough of that enchant type to be able to get one with 2 extra effects, unless that enchant type simply doesn't support 2+ extra effects).
** Overlords now drop 3 of these.

Thanks :)
