Summary0007458: Informing players that continent 2 is a more important goal.
DescriptionI think this particular suggestion will help a ton for new players to understand that they should not try to stay on the first continent for to long. While hopefully help assure them that they haven't even scratched the surface of possibilities this game has.

First of all a lot of complaints and suggestions made by other are from people who haven't even gotten to the second continent in their play through's yet. This creates a problem as the game in itself really doesn't open up into its core aspects until then. I don't mean the first continent doesn't give them that, what I am implying is the second continent is where the real Fun and more challenging aspects take shape.

I think that the game really needs to make it far more apparent that the first continent is nothing compared to subsequent continents, and that the first continent is more of a way to introduce the player to what the core principles behind the game are about, and that continents after is where the true meat of the game is.

In all honesty the "What you should do" menu should show continent 2 as a major core goal, and that getting there is where the game really opens up. I think it should show them just what continent one does not have compared to what continent 2 does.

TL;DR? Basically drill it into the players head that continent 1 is nothing compared to subsequent ones and that it's where the real portion of the game begins to start. I think this could help better explain that it's about getting what you need, not what you want as well.

I hope this makes sense, I really can't think of another way to make it clearer, but I think it should be made far more important then it is currently.

This might be true for now, but perhaps as Arcen adds more content, there will be quite a good reason to be on continent 1! As of right now, though, there isn't from a progression standpoint.

I personally think that the text popups that come up immediately after you do a major thing (like kill the overlord) and explain all the new stuff to a player are a bit overwhelming. I mean, you JUST shot the last fireball into the overlord, super super high intensity moment, you're pumped, and it's action-packed! To transition from that to a text box? I don't know about you, but I might close that text box without reading it because I saw some enchant containers drop and those are more exciting than a darn text box.

And now I'll never know that continent 2 is unlocked.

Same thing with the earlier popup messages. You JUST finished that mission, and it suddenly blocks your entire screen to tell you that some stuff is happening and I'm probably dying while this popup is on screen I DONT HAVE TIME TO READ THIS.

Even though it does say "Don't worry, you're safe."... maybe I didn't even read that far?

On a side note, I recently got into a long-ish discussion with Chris on an issue not that far from this one.

He was going to ask Josh to modify the FAQ with the overall game design's intent, but there's something he made me realize: this game is designed for two different types of players.

The first set are the 'drop in and kill 10 hours and get their money's worth' set. For these people, continent 1 is it. It's made so they enjoyed themselves.

For the more hard-core, I want a few hundred hours of gameplay amongst us, there's Continent 2+.

It's balanced that way on purpose, and part of why it's not shoved down your throat.

I am not trying to downsize the importance of continent 1, I want to make it more apparent that there is a vast more amount of content outside of their first continent.

I think a clearer and more understandable way of informing the player that their first continent is just the tip of the iceberg in terms of value is important. I think if it was emphasized more on the differences of the continents that players would better understand that they are only just starting.

The game just needs to make it far more apparent that there a lot more to the game then what the first continent can offer.

The problem with going to continent 2 (and on I guess) is that you can't do much until you stumble on a survivor mission. I've yet to find one since I got to continent 2, and I've been there for hours (which I guess isn't that much on the grand scale, but still a bit annoying).

It would help if you could use the "seek survivor"-power, (maybe a weaker version of it?) but you can't until you stumble on a hidden mission to find a survivor.

That said, it shouldn't just hold your hand on a new continent either, but randomness can drag out finding a survivor indefinitely, which could make someone less patient leave the game for something else.

I agree with at least informing the players that the game doesn't "end" when you beat the Overlord. There are hints of all the expansiveness of A Valley Without Wind, but for your average player they're going to think even if it does repeat, it's going to be more of the same. We've been playing AVWW all this week on my server and we just learned there's more continents out there and so much more to the game than the 1st Continent, so we've been going super-slow.
