Summary0007668: Make it possible to rename profiles.
DescriptionSomehow I missed the option to name my main profile before starting playing. Now in Multiplayer I have the options of looking dumb or starting all over again. Please give us the ability to rename a profile once it's created.

I don't think you can rename, but can't you choose to use the character information from the previous name? I think there is a dialog saying "which name associated with your account do you want to use"

That will force you to use the name and gear from that profile. It will not let you move anything from one profile to another. It is like starting from scratch.

I don't see this being easily fixable for a very long time, since it would require a server/editting tool...and that can open a whole other can of worms.

There is a manual way to get around it, but I don't know if it's allowed to be mentioned. I'll wait for confirmation before saying.

You can have the server host edit the world.dat file to produce this effect... but that's not what you're looking for!

I think the game should prompt you to enter a profile on your first entry to multiplayer (does it? I don't know, I haven't entered multiplayer for the first time since my first time entering multiplayer!)

I find that when I change my profile name in the settings and then go to a server I was on previously under a different name, it asks me which profile I want to use the data from. Does this window no longer appear?

Penumbra, that window only appears if you changed your profile name. Then it says this is the first time you've joined this world with this name, and warns you that you would be starting over.

I had played on a world in single player for some time, and then hosted it to allow a friend to join. It never asked me to name my profile when I started. Plus I am the server host. This seems like an annoying oversight on the part of the developers. Plus seeing as the game recognizes you when you log in and gives you the option to play your old profile, I don't see why it would be a problem to tell it, "Yes, that's me, but I'd like to use this name today under that profile."

For 1.016:

* Added new chat-line commands:
** rename_my_character
** rename_my_profile
** Usage example:
*** cmd:rename_my_character Dead Meat
** These should be fairly self-explanatory; "profile" is the username you enter when starting or first joining a world, and is displayed when you chat.
*** Please note: changing your profile name in a world only changes it in that world; if you then go log into some other world where you'd used that profile name before it will not have been changed there (and you may need to pick it from a list when logging in as your local currently-in-use profile name may be different now).

Thanks :)

Keith, quick question on this change for 1.016:

How will it handle the case of Player A currently using Name B, if they ALSO have already used Name A but rename their Name B to Name A? Trying to prevent a bug before it might possibly happen.

Example: I join a server with the name Zem. At some point it gets stuck, and I now make Zem2 to continue playing. What would happen if I rename (the current) Zem2 to (old, stuck) Zem? Would it conflict?

It's still tied to your serial code, isn't it?

Yes, but I meant the way it reads the data. I know the important fields are -accountnumber,code,profilename,furtherdata- but...

What is to stop a conflict on either side between:

10,123456,User1,etc.
20,123456,User2,etc.

IF it changes to

10,123456,User1,etc.
20,123456,User1,etc.

That is my question.

From a coder's aspect, I see that as a potential problem further down the line.

Edit: Yes, I know the obvious workaround would be renaming the old (stuck, Zem for example) profile to something else, then changing the new (unstuck for example, Zem2) profile to the original name (Zem2 becomes Zem), but not everyone would do it that way.

Oh, I see. Sorry. I thought you meant changing to a name in use by another player on the server.
