Summary0008896: difficulty slider - density of monsters
DescriptionCurrently, the number of monsters encountered in any particular zone for the most part seems pretty sparse; that is, except for occasional groupings, the player never runs into more than 2'ish monsters at the same time. This seems to be true (from my experience) in both outdoor zones and caves (for the most part).

If you want to increase the combat difficulty slider; those sparse monsters in outdoor and cave areas become more difficult to deal with, yes; but because of the space you have to dodge, they don't become that significantly more difficult.

Inside buildings is another matter, as there are frequently areas that are very densely populated; and it is harder to dodge; making an increase to the combat difficulty slider even more difficult for these areas (compared to outdoor/cave areas). This is fine.

However, certain building rooms spawn with 1 monster, and only one monster, whenever you enter them (some small hallways and small staircases come to mind). This breeds a small feeling of repetitiveness for the much smaller rooms; because you know you'll find exactly one monster in there.

This is all well and good; and there's nothing wrong with it as it stands.

I do, however, propose another slider as an option to increase the difficulty of the game: the monster density slider.

At default setting, monsters spawn as they normally do upon entering an area/room.

At default setting + 1, monsters spawn about twice as densely (2x the number of monsters) in outdoor/cave areas; and between 1 to 2 times as densely in indoor areas. In missions that spawn monsters, monsters spawn twice as fast.

At default setting +2, monsters spawn about three times as densely in outdoor/cave areas; and between 2 to 3 times as densely in indoor areas. In missions that spawn monsters, monster spawn three times as fast.

Yes, this option has the possibility of making the game really incredibly difficult on the higher combat difficulties; but would that be a bad thing?

This also would really potentially make multiplayer bog down, unfortunately.

Curses! Fair enough.
