Summary | 0019080: Confusion over highlighted unit
Description | So I would assume that the text in the lower left would provide useful information about whatever unit(s) are currently selected. For example, if I clicked on my Ark I would expect that to stay selected. However, the selection text seems to change randomly once I move the mouse, to some "default" for the planet. This is hard if I want to be able (say) track the health in a particular starship during a fight, or remember which construction queue I am setting (Is this my flagship? Is this the Space Dock?). A few pictures to illustrate. In the first ("hovering ark") I am left clicking the ark. However, as soon as I move my cursor away I now see the details for the Tachyon Array. It's worth pointing out also that the Tachyon Array in question is on a different planet. This makes it hard to be able to tell what is going on.

The mouse cursor is supposed to be showing the text for whatever you are hovering over at the present time, not what is selected. However, are you still seeing text for random other ships when not hovering over anything as of version 0.123? |
|
So if I want to track the health/stats of a ship in combat, how would I do that? Given that I might have my Ark in a giant fight during a hack, this seems important. |

The overly-literal answer to your question, in this game and in Classic, is "you don't." Not unless you want to continuously hover over a ship. ...Although I guess in Classic there is a ship list for selected ships, showing their combined health per ship type, so there is a precedent there. I'm not sure how much I really loved that, though. What you're requesting is entirely reasonable, but I don't think it really fits with this particular GUI element. Having it sometimes be a display of what you have selected and otherwise work on hover would be really confusing. Actually right now it showing a tooltip for planet-wide stuff is bad enough, come to think of it. Hey, it's pre-alpha. ;) There are overall three general groups of potential functionality that I hear you asking for, that should be considered separately from this topic (it would be good for the forums, and/or mantis entries separate from this one). Firstly, the ability to keep track of the health of the Ark anywhere you go in the galaxy is probably a good idea for a permanent GUI element, to be frank. That's something you should always know, and see if it's going down. Shields too on it, maybe. Secondly, the ability to keep track of the health of some specific ships on the planet you are at. Probably the flagships and some other key structures (of yours) should have their health pinned automatically on planets. Maybe? Thirdly, there's the whole "see the health overview for ships you have selected" thing. More like in the first game. This seems like something we should have, although the formatting and so forth really could use a look-over. Anyhow, if you agree with those three items, or have other ideas sidelong to them, then I think that making new mantis and/or forum topics for those would be best, and then this issue is left to deal with the stale tooltip issue. Cheers! |

I am okay with this. Lets use this bug to track "stale tooltips", and I'll open your third comment as a seperate Mantis problem. I think Elements 1 and 2 would be handled well in the sidebar (I think flagships are already supposed to get their own line), and the Ark could have a little thing next to it saying "Your ark is on planet X, and it is IN/OUT OF combat" |
|
Good idea on elements 1 and 2! Can you make a suggestion topic with your idea for those, too? |
|
I'll start something in the forum |
