Summary0008840: Spell powers
DescriptionI have a level 3 and level 4 uncommon Fireball and the level 3 does 180 damage per second with magical power of 68.4 the level 4 version which I would expect to be better does 174.4 damage with a magical power of 71.5. This doesn't seem right to me.

I have also noticed this issue with other spells. If you need more info let me know.

Is there an extra spell effect in the description of the level 3 spell: something like +10% spell power?

No the spell effects are on the level 3 version -30 haste on enemies and +10 haste on the player. The only effect on the level 4 version is +40% projectile speed.

Hmmmm, that +10 haste on player is probably affecting the cooldown resulting in a higher damage per second despite a lower damage per shot. Would be my guess.

The level 3 spell with the +10 haste to player has the highest damage per second.

Stats for both spells are:

Fireball 3
Mana Cost:34
Cooldown:0.38 Red:0.24
Magical Power:68.4 Fire Attack Penetration:15
Damage Per Second:180 Damage Per Mana:2.01
Enemy -30 Haste
Player +10 Haste

Fireball 4
Mana Cost:34
Cooldown:0.41 Red:0.26
Magical Power:71.5 Fire Attack Penetration:20
Damage Per Second:174.4 Damage Per Mana:2.1
+40% Projectile Speed

Higher-level attack spells are "better" in that they have higher "Attack Penetration". It's explained here: http://www.arcengames.com/mediawiki/index.php?title=AVWW_-_Post-Launch_Series_2_Release_Notes#Beta_1.104_The_Victorious_Return_Of..._Levels.21

This does make it harder to compare spells of different levels, I agree. Maybe the panel should be changed to show e.g. "DPS against Level 3 monsters".

I dislike the "Armor Penetration" and "Shielding" stats. I would also be opposed to a "DPS against level X monster" display. I would much prefer to have spells do X damage, and spell damage and enemy HP scales accordingly when leveling. That way, it's very quick, simple and efficient to figure out exactly how powerful your spells will be against, say, an opponent 4 levels higher (as encountered in cave systems).

Yes, that results in huge numbers later on. Why are huge numbers a bad thing? Disgaea did huge numbers in a wonderful and entertaining fashion.

Huge numbers are out of the question -- in the game you reference they only got into the millions. By level 100 here it would literally be about 35 trillion. I wrote up in detail why this was done in he release notes.

Anyhow, all looks well here in this thread in terms of there not being a bug.

I split out my "DPS against Level 3 monsters" display idea into 0008966.

I'd like to reiterate my idea in 0008283: instead of listing "penetration" and "shielding" stats, simply state a rule that a difference of n levels causes (1.5)^n damage.
